How to choose a drinking water filter

These systems filter through one or more cartridges without an RO membrane, so there is no reject water and no drain line. This collection runs from single-cartridge countertop filters to seven-stage cartridge units, plus a gravity-fed glass purifier, an under-sink three-stage system and two ultrafiltration units, from Crystal Quest, Waterdrop, Brondell and The Water Machine, with 1 to 7 stages.

Who it is for

Homes that want a simple filter at the kitchen tap, kitchens that cannot fit a reverse osmosis system under the sink, and anyone who would rather not send water to the drain. Faucet-connected countertop units suit renters; the gravity unit suits a counter with no faucet nearby.

What to compare

  • Filter type: carbon, ceramic, multi-media, specialty cartridges (alkaline, arsenic, nitrate, lead, fluoride) or ultrafiltration. Product pages list the media in each stage.
  • Stages: a single cartridge is simplest to maintain; double and triple housings separate the jobs.
  • Install: countertop faucet-connected with a diverter valve, gravity fill-by-hand, or under-sink with its own faucet.
  • Flow rate: cartridge filters run at line pressure; the product page lists the rated GPM.
  • Rated capacity in gallons and the replacement SKU, listed on each product page.

Common questions

There is no RO membrane, drain line or pressurized tank, so installation is simpler and no water is sent to the drain.

Most Crystal Quest countertop systems connect to a standard kitchen faucet with a diverter valve. Pull-out and sprayer faucets usually need an adapter; check the product page.

A hollow-fiber membrane with a larger pore size than reverse osmosis. It runs on line pressure with no tank and no reject water.

Systems in this collection currently range from about $50 to about $350 before shipping. Each product page shows the current price and the replacement cartridge.

None of the filters in this collection lists PFAS reduction. For PFAS, look at reverse osmosis systems whose product page lists a PFOA and PFOS claim under NSF/ANSI 58.
