The distinction that actually matters
Point of entry means the main line, before the water branches to anything. Point of use means one fixture. The useful way to choose is not by budget or by house size — it is by asking whether the problem is something you contact or something you ingest.
Chlorine you contact. Sediment you contact — and it wears out fixtures, washing machines and water heaters everywhere in the house. Iron staining you contact, in every sink and every load of laundry. Those are point-of-entry problems, and no amount of filtration at the kitchen tap improves them.
Nitrate, arsenic and dissolved solids you ingest. They do nothing to your shower, your laundry or your plumbing. Treating an entire house's worth of water to fix something that only matters in the two litres a day you drink is spending a great deal of money on bathwater.

The row worth sitting with is total dissolved solids. There is no whole-house product in our catalog or anyone else's that reduces TDS at residential scale for a residential price. Sizing a whole-house system: the number is GPM
Point-of-use systems are rated in gallons per day because they fill a tank or trickle into a glass. Whole-house systems are rated in gallons per minute, because they have to keep up with a shower and a washing machine running at once. Undersize one and you get a pressure drop across the entire house.

Two things to note about those prices. First, several are ranges, because the same system is sold in single, double and triple housing configurations with and without a stand — which is why the copy says "From". A decision framework
If you are on municipal water and buying one thing
Buy point of use. Your utility already treats for microbiological safety and reports against enforceable EPA limits, and the marginal gain from a whole-house carbon filter is mostly comfort — chlorine smell in the shower, softer-feeling water. If you are on a private well
You need both, and you need a laboratory test before either. EPA does not regulate private wells, which means there is no compliance record and no one testing but you. If the problem is staining or smell rather than a test result

Questions people actually ask
Can a whole-house filter replace an RO system?
No, and the reason is structural rather than about quality. Reverse osmosis operates at gallons per day against a membrane; whole-house filtration operates at gallons per minute through media. Nothing reduces TDS across a whole house at residential scale and residential cost.
Can an RO system replace a whole-house filter?
Only for drinking and cooking. Your shower, laundry, dishwasher and water heater all still receive untreated water, and if the problem is sediment or iron, those are the places it does damage.
Which should I install first?
Whole-house first if you are doing both, for two reasons: it protects the RO system's pre-filters, and the pressure and plumbing work is easier to do before there is an under-sink unit in the way.
Does a whole-house carbon filter remove lead?
Only if it is certified to do so. Lead reduction is a specific claim under NSF/ANSI 53, tested individually, and carbon media varies enormously. EPA's action level is 0.015 mg/L today and 0.010 mg/L from 1 November 2027. Check the certification on the specific product page rather than assuming that carbon implies lead reduction.
How many people is a "4–6 GPM" system actually for?
Crystal Quest labels these directly: the 4 GPM compact units are described as 1–2 people, and the 8 GPM Big Blue SMART as 2–3 people. If your house regularly runs two showers at once, size up rather than to the label.
What about a filter on the shower head?
It is a partial answer to a chlorine complaint and nothing else. If chlorine in the shower is the whole problem, a whole-house carbon stage solves it everywhere for not much more.
