The decision is about your cabinet, not your water
Both formats can filter well. What actually decides it is whether you are allowed to modify the cabinet under your sink, and how much counter space you are willing to give up permanently. People agonise over contaminant tables and then discover on install day that their landlord will not allow a hole in the sink deck, or that the unit they bought does not physically fit next to the garbage disposal.
Choose on plumbing and space first. Filtration performance is the tiebreaker, not the opener.
A countertop filter sits beside the sink and taps into the existing faucet. There is no drilling and no permanent plumbing, which is why it is usually the only option for renters. The trade is that it occupies counter space and is visible all the time. What reverse osmosis actually changes

A decision framework that survives contact with a real kitchen
Start with the three disqualifiers
Answer these before you look at a single product. Any one of them decides the format on its own.
- Can you drill? If the answer is no — rental, stone counter you will not cut, a landlord who has not said yes in writing — you are buying a countertop unit. Nothing below overrides this.
- Is there a spare hole at the sink? Many sinks have a capped accessory hole for a sprayer or soap dispenser. If yours does, an under-sink install stops being a drilling job and becomes an afternoon.

Then decide whether you need RO at all

Then size it
Gallons-per-day ratings describe the membrane's production rate under test conditions, not what comes out of your faucet. A 50 GPD system with a 3.2-gallon pressurised tank delivers quickly until the tank is empty and then slowly. A 600 GPD tankless system delivers continuously but produces nothing in advance. For one or two people, tank systems are fine and cheaper. For a household that fills a pot, a kettle and two bottles in the same five minutes, tankless is the format that does not annoy you.
What the specs mean, and which ones to ignore
Stage count is the least useful number on the page. A "stage" has no standardised definition. The Thunder 1000C counts twelve; the Circle RC100 counts four and holds more NSF/ANSI certifications than the twelve-stage unit. Both numbers are accurate. Neither tells you what was actually tested and verified.
Micron rating is useful, but only within a technology. The Waterdrop RO units list 0.0001 micron, which describes the RO membrane itself. Sediment pre-filters are typically 5 micron. Ultrafiltration membranes sit around 0.01 micron — the C1S and the other RO systems are two orders of magnitude tighter than a UF system, which is the real difference between those two product families.
Certification is the number that is actually verified by somebody else. Everything else on a spec sheet is the manufacturer describing its own product. NSF/ANSI listings are the part a third party tested.
Cost over five years, not on the day
Sticker price is the smaller half of the decision. Filters are the recurring cost, and the intervals are published, so this is arithmetic rather than guesswork.

The pattern worth noticing: the single-cartridge designs are cheaper to run and much harder to get wrong, because there is only one thing to remember. The multi-stage systems give you finer control over which media you refresh and when, at the cost of a maintenance schedule you have to actually keep.
Budget for one more line item if you are not doing the work yourself. An under-sink install that requires a new hole in a stone counter is a plumber's visit; an install into an existing accessory hole usually is not.

Does an RO system waste water?
It sends a portion to the drain, yes. NSF/ANSI 58 addresses this directly: efficiency rating and recovery rating are both part of what the standard evaluates, alongside contaminant reduction. Tankless designs like the G3P600 and the X8 are generally built around better ratios than older tank systems, but the number that matters is the one on the specific unit's certification listing, not a rule of thumb.
Will RO strip minerals out of my water?
Reverse osmosis reduces dissolved solids, and dissolved minerals are dissolved solids — that is the mechanism working as designed, and it is why TDS reduction is the required claim under NSF/ANSI 58.
