Why a membrane is not like the other filters
The carbon and sediment stages in an RO system are consumable media. They adsorb or trap until they are full, and then they stop. The membrane is different: it is a barrier, and it degrades rather than fills. Its job is to reject dissolved solids, which is precisely why NSF/ANSI 58 — the standard for reverse osmosis drinking water treatment systems — makes TDS reduction the one claim every certified system must be tested against.
The practical consequence is that a tired membrane does not announce itself. A blocked sediment filter causes an obvious pressure drop. A spent carbon stage lets the chlorine taste come back. A membrane past its life just rejects less, steadily and silently, and the water still looks and tastes the same.
A sediment filter fails loudly. A membrane fails quietly. That is why it goes on a calendar.
How to tell a membrane is finished
- It is past its interval. This is the reliable signal. Almost every membrane in this catalog is specified at 24 months.
- A TDS meter reads higher than it used to. A cheap inline meter is the only direct measurement available to a homeowner. Take a reading when the system is new, write it down, and compare annually. Without that baseline the reading tells you very little.
- Production slows on a tankless system, or the tank on a traditional system takes noticeably longer to refill.
- The filter-change indicator is lit. Both Brondell systems put an LED on the faucet. It is a timer rather than a measurement, but a timer is the right mechanism for a component that degrades on a schedule.
What is not a signal: taste. Post-carbon polishing stages handle taste, and they will keep doing it long after the membrane behind them has faded.
Two completely different products are called "RO membrane"
This is where most wrong purchases happen.
Traditional systems: a bare membrane in a standard housing
Older and tank-based systems use a membrane element that slides into a housing, sized by its production rate in gallons per day. These are broadly cross-compatible, and you match the GPD rating your system was designed around.
Tankless systems: a proprietary composite cartridge
Modern tankless units use a sealed cartridge that contains the membrane plus other media, twist-locks into the body, and is coded to a specific model. The WD-G3P600-RO is not a 600 GPD membrane you could put in anything else — it is the G3P600's cartridge. Ordering on GPD alone here will get you a part that does not fit.

Do not forget the stages in front of it
The pre-filters exist to protect the membrane. Chlorine in particular damages thin-film composite membranes, which is why there is always carbon upstream. Skip those replacements and you shorten the life of the expensive component to save money on the cheap one.

The interesting result is not which is cheapest — it is that the systems with one part number get maintained and the systems with three often do not. If you know you will not keep a schedule, buy for that.
Changing it, in order
- Shut the cold feed and open the RO faucet to relieve pressure. On a tank system, close the tank valve too.
- Have a towel ready. Every cartridge holds water.
- Replace the pre-filters at the same time where the schedule lines up. A new membrane behind exhausted carbon starts its life already under attack.
- Flush the system before you drink from it. New carbon sheds fines; the manufacturer's instructions will tell you how long.
- Take a TDS reading and write it down. This is your new baseline, and it is what makes the next assessment a measurement rather than a guess.
Questions people actually ask
Can I use a higher-GPD membrane to get more water?
On a traditional housing it will physically fit, but the system's flow restrictor and pump were matched to the original rating, so changing the membrane alone changes the ratio of product to drain water rather than simply giving you more. Match the rating the system was built around.
Is a generic membrane fine?
For a standard housing on a traditional system, a membrane of the correct GPD rating is a commodity part. For a tankless system, there is no generic — the cartridge is model-specific, and this is the case where buying on price rather than part number ends with a part that does not fit.
How long does a membrane really last?
The published interval assumes the pre-filters were maintained and the feed water was within spec. High TDS, high sediment or chlorine getting past a spent carbon stage all shorten it. That is the argument for the annual TDS reading: your water decides, not the label.
What is the difference between an RO membrane and a UF membrane?
Two orders of magnitude. The RO membranes here are specified at 0.0001 micron; the ultrafiltration membrane cartridge at From $49.50 is 0.01 micron. UF is tight enough for suspended matter and much larger organisms, and it does not remove dissolved solids — which is why UF systems are not certified under NSF/ANSI 58 and do not claim TDS reduction.
Do I need to sanitise the system when I change filters?
Follow your manufacturer's instructions. Opening a system exposes the inside to room air, which is exactly why the flush step exists.
