PFAS in Drinking Water: What “Forever Chemicals” Mean for Your Home

PFAS — per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, better known as “forever chemicals” — are now regulated in U.S. drinking water for the first time. Here’s what the new limits mean, how to find out if PFAS is in your tap, and which home filtration technologies actually remove it.

What PFAS are and why they’re called forever chemicals

PFAS are a family of thousands of synthetic chemicals used since the 1940s in non-stick cookware, water-repellent fabrics, food packaging, and firefighting foam. The same carbon-fluorine bonds that make them useful make them nearly indestructible — they don’t break down in the environment or the human body, so they accumulate over decades. Peer-reviewed research links long-term exposure to certain PFAS with higher cholesterol, immune effects, and increased risk of some cancers (ATSDR/CDC).

The new EPA limits

In April 2024 the EPA finalized the first national drinking-water standard for PFAS, setting enforceable limits of 4 parts per trillion for PFOA and PFOS — among the lowest limits ever set for any drinking-water contaminant — plus limits for PFHxS, PFNA, and GenX chemicals (EPA). Public water systems must complete monitoring and begin complying in stages through 2029–2031. Two important gaps remain in the meantime:

  • Timing: utilities have years to test and install treatment — water flowing today may still carry PFAS.
  • Private wells aren’t covered. If you’re one of the roughly 23 million U.S. households on a private well, no agency tests your water for you (EPA).

How to find out if PFAS is in your water

Start with your utility’s annual Consumer Confidence Report, or look up recent UCMR 5 monitoring results — the EPA required nearly all utilities to test for 29 PFAS compounds between 2023 and 2025. On a well, use a state-certified lab that offers EPA Method 537.1 or 533 testing. What actually removes PFAS at home

The EPA identifies three residential technologies with strong PFAS-removal performance (EPA):

  1. Reverse osmosis — the most complete option, typically removing well above 90% of PFOA/PFOS along with lead, arsenic, and nitrates. See our reverse osmosis systems.
  2. Activated carbon — effective when filters are certified for PFAS reduction (NSF/ANSI 53 or 58 with a PFAS claim) and replaced on schedule; carbon that stays in service too long can stop removing PFAS.
  3. Anion exchange — used mostly in whole-house configurations.

Boiling does not remove PFAS — it concentrates them as water evaporates. Standard pitcher filters without a PFAS certification are also unreliable for these compounds.

Point-of-use vs. whole-house for PFAS

Because the main PFAS exposure route is drinking and cooking water, a point-of-use RO system at the kitchen sink addresses the highest-impact water first and is the most economical route.
