Nitrate is one of the most common contaminants in American groundwater — usually invisible, tasteless, and a particular danger for infants. If you’re on a private well or live near farmland, here’s what to know and how to filter it.
Where nitrate comes from
Nitrate enters water mainly from fertilizer runoff, animal manure, and septic systems. It moves easily through soil into groundwater, so it’s especially common in agricultural regions and in shallow private wells (USGS). You can’t see, taste, or smell it — the only way to know your level is a lab test.
Why it matters — especially for infants
The EPA sets the drinking-water limit for nitrate at 10 milligrams per liter (as nitrogen). The most serious risk is to babies under six months: high nitrate can cause methemoglobinemia, or “blue baby syndrome,” which reduces the blood’s ability to carry oxygen (CDC). Never prepare infant formula with water that hasn’t been tested and treated for nitrate, and note that boiling does not remove nitrate — it actually concentrates it.
Test first — every well, every year
Public utilities test for nitrate and report it; private wells are not covered by any agency, so testing is on the owner. The EPA and CDC recommend testing private wells for nitrate (and bacteria) at least once a year, and immediately if a household member becomes pregnant or an infant will be drinking the water (EPA).
How to remove nitrate
Standard carbon filters and ordinary softeners do not remove nitrate. Three technologies do:
- Reverse osmosis — the most practical whole-home-to-tap answer for most households; it reduces nitrate along with many other dissolved contaminants. See our reverse osmosis systems and under-sink RO.
- Ion exchange (nitrate-selective) — used in some whole-house setups sized for higher nitrate loads.
- Distillation — effective but slow and energy-intensive; usually a last resort.
