Here's the uncomfortable truth about water filters: every one of them has a service life, and a filter running past it isn't just doing less — it can start doing harm. Exhausted carbon can begin releasing what it captured, and spent media becomes a comfortable place for bacteria to grow. The certification on the box only applies to a filter that's replaced on schedule.
Replacement intervals by filter type
- Sediment pre-filters: every 6–12 months. Sooner on well water or old municipal mains — when you can see it turn brown, it's telling you something.
- Carbon filters (block or granular): every 6–12 months. Carbon works by adsorption; once its surface is full, it's full — the water still flows, but nothing is being removed.
- Reverse osmosis membranes: every 2–4 years. The pre-filters exist to protect this stage — skip them and chlorine will destroy a membrane years early.
- RO post/polishing filters: every 12 months.
- Pitcher filters: roughly every 40 gallons — about 2 months for a typical household, faster than most people expect.
- Refrigerator filters: every 6 months.
- Whole-house cartridges: per manufacturer, typically 6–12 months.
These are working ranges, not guarantees — your manufacturer's stated interval and your actual water conditions win. High sediment, very hard water, or heavy chlorination all shorten filter life.
The signs you've waited too long
Falling flow rate at the faucet. A return of chlorine taste or odor. Cloudy water or visible particles. For RO systems: a full storage tank that takes far longer to refill, or a rising TDS reading.
The $15 tool that removes the guesswork
For RO systems, a TDS meter turns maintenance from a calendar guess into a measurement. Test the water going in and the water coming out: a healthy membrane typically rejects 90%+ of dissolved solids. When your product water TDS starts climbing toward the feed number, the membrane is done — whatever the calendar says.
Make it automatic
Nobody remembers filter schedules, which is why the industry's dirty secret is that most installed systems are running on expired media. Two fixes: put the interval on your phone calendar the day you install a filter, and keep a spare set on the shelf so the swap happens the day it's due — not the week the replacement ships.
