Hard water is the most common water complaint in America, and also the most misunderstood. It is not a health risk. It is a maintenance bill that arrives a little at a time — in your water heater, your dishwasher, your skin, and your fixtures.
What "hardness" actually is
Hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium, picked up as groundwater moves through limestone and chalk. The U.S. Geological Survey classifies it in milligrams per liter of calcium carbonate:
- 0–60 mg/L — soft
- 61–120 mg/L — moderately hard
- 121–180 mg/L — hard
- Over 180 mg/L — very hard
Most of the U.S. sits in the hard-to-very-hard range, particularly the Midwest, Southwest, and Florida. Your utility's annual water quality report lists your number, or a simple test strip will tell you in seconds.
What it does to your house
When hard water is heated or evaporates, the minerals come out of solution as scale. That's the white crust on your showerhead — and the invisible layer inside your water heater, where scale acts as insulation between the heating element and the water. The result is a heater that works harder, costs more to run, and fails earlier. The same mechanism shortens the life of dishwashers, washing machines, coffee makers, and ice machines.
Hardness also reacts with soap to form soap scum, which is why hard-water homes use more detergent, get stiffer laundry, and deal with film on glass shower doors. Many people notice dry skin and dull hair for the same reason.
What it doesn't do
Harm you. Calcium and magnesium are nutrients, not contaminants — there is no federal health limit on hardness, and drinking hard water is fine. If a salesperson leads with health claims about hardness, that tells you something about the salesperson.
Softener, RO, or both?
A water softener (ion exchange, certified under NSF/ANSI 44) protects the whole house: the heater, the appliances, the pipes, your laundry. It swaps calcium and magnesium for sodium. It does not remove lead, PFAS, nitrates, or anything else on the health-contaminant list — softening and filtration are different jobs.
Reverse osmosis at the kitchen sink removes hardness from your drinking and cooking water along with the health contaminants — but it doesn't protect your water heater.
The combination — softener for the house, RO for the tap — is the standard setup for very hard water, and softened feed water actually extends the life of an RO membrane.
